What are the Dry Tortugas?

The Dry Tortugas are a cluster of seven islands almost 70 miles west of Key West. They are composed of coral reefs and sand. and are known for it's famous bird and marine life. There are also legends of pirates, sunken gold, and a military past.

In 1513 the Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon discovered the Dry Tortugas. He named them Dry because none of the islands have fresh water. He added Tortugas to the name because he saw an abundance of turtles on the island.

  1. When you're paddling out to waves on a sealion board, you want to keep your weight evenly distributed on the board. You also want to keep your legs straight and your back straight, so you don't tip the board over. Once you're past the waves, you can start to surf! seal on paddle board
